We are talking about Free Online RPGs (MMORPGs) – but what it really is?

A MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) is one of the genres of computer role-playing games in which a big number of people are interacting with each other in a fictional world. Similiar to other RPGs you’re playing a role of a virtual character and controlling all his or her actions. What is different for MMORPGs comparing to the rest of the genre is that there are many people playing simultaneously and the persistence of the online RPGs world – that is: it doesn’t disappear when a a person is away from the game – what is more, it’s constantly changing.Most of online RPGs use fantasy theme (medieval-like one but with some kind of sorcery involved and a neverending threat from all kind of monsters), some may develop different themes ? sci-fi, crime fiction, cartoon or worlds based on various novels. All of those have always one thing in common: a character we create kills monsters and completes tasks in order to earn experience and become stronger. In those games economy can also play an important role ? people can make trades between each other or with NPCs (non player characters) with the use of game currency.

The first well-known MMORPG was Meridian 59, one of the flagship products of the industry, Ultima Online, was created right after. The country often associated with online RPGs was (and still is)Korea ? many well known online worlds were created there and then shown to the wider (that is, western) audience.

Nowadays MMORPGs are very popular all over the world and became a huge industry ? they’ve made for their creators over a billion USD in 2006 and this number is still getting higher and higher. Online RPGs are a place of entertainment, meeting new people and socialising or just killing some time.

There are many MMORPGs that require you to pay a monthly subcription fee (for example World of Warcraft), in order to play others you need to buy a CD/DVD. And there are some that interest us the most ? completely free online RPGs. There are a lot of them and some even are not worst than those well-known games you need to pay for.

How do those MMORPGs stay free?

Some of them use ?item malls? when you can buy game items for real money or offer paid subscriptions that are not mandatory but offer some incentives, other (browser based RPGs usually) have some ads on their websites and get a revenue, and the rest are made by people, who want nothing more than their handmade world being populated by people.

Review for the F2P online RPG Atlantica Online by NDOORS Corporation, a South Korean videogame developer. The game is set in an alternate history Earth, with the game map consisting of large parts of the northern hemisphere. The setting is fantasy-themed with elements of steampunk. The combat system is turned based; it has more in common with games like Final Fantasy, Lufia 2 and Lunar Silver Star Story than EverQuest or World of Warcraft.
